Gardens that are connected to their landscape, combining beauty with ecological design. Planting is layered and abundant, which looks good while protecting the soil and providing a biodiverse haven for wildlife. Planting designs combine year-round structure with seasonal change.
My planting schemes combine New Zealand natives with carefully chosen, non-invasive exotics. I use ecosourced native plants whenever possible. These are plants that are adapted to thrive on your site, so will look great with less maintenance while supporting local ecosystems.
When choosing plants I also consider climate resilience and what this means for plants in our region. For the Wellington region, plants that will have resilience to our changing climate are those that are capable of withstanding both periods of summer drought and our wet winters and springs in soil that is often high in clay.
For clients interested in productive gardens, I love to incorporate fruit trees and herb and vegetable gardens into designs, drawing on permaculture principles to enrich traditional garden design.
For me, a successful garden is one that attracts both people and wildlife.
Gardens connected to place
The best gardens are grounded in their landscape and evoke a strong sense of place. Whether this is a coastal garden or a garden close to the bush or the town belt, gardens that feel connected to the nearby natural landscapes are those that work best. I like to carefully consider the landscape nearby or that once was and to evoke this through planting and materials used in a design.
Understanding your site’s unique characteristics is also important for a successful design. Soil type, sunshine, wind, views, etc all need to be
